Barnard Castle

Located on the north bank of the River Tees; grew around Norman castle built by Bernard de Balliol 1112-1132; site of uprising during reign of Henry VIII in 1569; noted for Bowes Museum (1892); Dickens was inspired to write the novel, Nicholas Nickelby, here in 1838.
