Overview

Ancient Roman barrier on the northwestern frontier of the province of Britain, extending 73.5 miles from Wallsend to Bowness-on Solway; completed in 136 CE, built by governor Aulus Platorius Nepos to divide and protect N frontier of province of Britain; damaged several times and restored in 367 by Theodosius; consisted of a continuous curtain of wall with small forts, towers, and ditches.
