Overview
The French-speaking province of Brabant Wallon is in south-central Belgium, bordered by the provinces of Flemish Brabant to the north, Liége to the southeast, Namur to the south, and Hainaut to the southwest. It was established in 1995 when the former province of Brabant was divided into two, one of largely Flemish-speaking people and one of French speakers. Waterloo Battlefield lies in the northwest. The eastern half of the province is agricultural, producing sugar beets, wheat, and cattle. The western half is more industrial, with papermaking, electromechanical engineering, and metalworking factories. The 2003 estimated population was 356,200.
