Named after Maclou, a Welsh monk who fled to Brittany; became part of France in 1491; prospered as center for navigators, traders & privateers 17th-18th cen.; birthplace of 16th-cen. explorer Jacques Cartier; largely destroyed during WW II, later rebuilt.
