British Empire

Was a global system of colonies, protectorates, and territories that flourished from the 16th through the 19th centuries; in the 20th century, remaining members are known instead as the "British Commonwealth"; at its height, the empire held a vast amount of territory worldwide and was a dominant trade, military, and maritime power; the empire was ruled by sovereigns in England.
