Area of Tigris and Euphrates rivers, from mountains of Asia Minor to Persian Gulf; includes parts of modern Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Turkey; seat of Babylonia and Assyria 3000-325 BCE, of Mitanni kingdom 1475 BCE; part of Persian, Parthian, Roman, and Sassanid empires. The name is Greek for "the land between the rivers."
