Overview
Coastal strip, formerly part of Palestine; seized from Egypt by Israel, along with contiguous Sinai peninsula, in 1956; relinquished control, but seized again by Israel in 1967 Six Day War; Sinai was returned to Egypt 1982; occupants are Palestinians and Jewish settlers. As of Spring 2005, the status of the area is as follows: Israeli-occupied with current status subject to the Israeli-Palestinian Interim Agreement; permanent status to be determined through further negotiation.
