Overview
Comprises 2 coral atolls; charted by William Keeling in 1609; most inhabitants are descended from Malays brought here in 1826, and from Scotsman John Clunies-Ross and family; British from 1857, administered by Ceylon after 1878; important haven for seabirds. In 1955, the islands were transferred to Australian control, and are considered a territory.
