Overview
The region of Pannonia comprises an area east of the Adriatic Sea and west of the Carpathian Mountains, corresponding to early-21st century western Hungary, parts of eastern Austria, Slovenia, and northern Yugoslavia. Conquered by the Romans under Octavian in 35 BCE, it became a province of the Roman Empire. The Emperor Trajan divided it into two parts in 106 CE. The Romans withdrew after 395 CE, after which it ceased to exist as a separate administrative entity.
