Overview
This violin is signed and dated by the maker, G.H. Thomas, London, 1832.
It was obtained by Salvatore Cimino I (1810-1899), a well-known Italian migrant who settled in Wellington in 1840, for his son Salvatore Cimino II (1853-1934) in 1867 (‘S. Cimino 1867’ is marked on the back of the violin).
Salvatore Cimino II learned to play on this instrument and kept it for his musical work until 1925 (he was a prominent figure in the musical life of Wellington around 1900).
The violin is accompanied by various accessories, such as extra pegs, mute, pitch pipe, bows, rosin (for treating the bows), chin rest, bridges, end pin, and tuning accessory.
