Overview
This ballet costume was worn for one of Sir Jon Trimmer's outstanding roles in the time-honoured classic ballet 'Giselle' as Albrecht (the Duke). He wore this particular outfit in the 1993 production of Giselle.
Sir Jon (1939-2023, New Zealand) had an outstanding career in New Zealand ballet, having danced most of the Royal New Zealand Ballet's years of existence (established 1953). The year 2008 marked his 50th year as a character dancer - this was the longest such career in New Zealand. He was well-loved by New Zealand audiences and known internationally.
This outfit is an excellent example of the work of well-known designer Peter Cazalet. It exhibits rich materials, textures and detailing, and the outfit is also of interest for its weight - 10 kg. Peter Cazalet has been designing sets and costumes for ballet and opera since 1970 and has worked with ballet companies around the world including the Scottish Ballet, Singapore Dance Theater, and the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
