Andrew Pfeiffer; producer; 1993; New Zealand
Overview
This costume was worn by ballet dancer Sir Jon Trimmer (1939-2023, New Zealand). Two of Trimmer's outstanding roles (including mime and acting) were in the ballet 'Petrouchka'; initially in the title role of the puppet in 1967, and then later in as the Charlatan. This particular outfit represents the last production of Petrouchka that Jon was involved in (as the Charlatan), in 1993. This particular production featured a huge cast including children and the title role was played by Douglas Wright. It was significant for its scale and was very successful.
Sir Jon Trimmer had an outstanding career in New Zealand ballet, having danced most of the Royal New Zealand Ballet's years of existence (established 1953). The year 2008 marked his 50th year as a character dancer - this was the longest such career in New Zealand. He was well-loved by New Zealand audiences and known internationally.
This outfit is an excellent example of the work of well-known designer Raymond Boyce. He has been one of New Zealand's most significant designers for theatre and the performing arts, as well as a puppeteer and puppet designer. This outfit exhibits fine applique work in rich materials, but also includes the use of materials which perform well under stage lights such as the shot sapphire blue and pink furnishing fabric radiating out from the dragon's head.
