The wide eyes and tense faces of the couple on the poster betray a moment of high drama, maybe even terror.
If the original poster showed exactly what they could see, in this photograph, Walker Evans has cropped it out. Instead, he draws attention to the eyes and the rip in the woman’s head. In another version, he cropped everything except the faces, producing an even more mysterious and disturbing image.
