Overview
Since 1958, Christo has covered numerous objects in his signature ‘wraps’ – from small domestic items through to buildings and even a coastline. He has often collaborated with the artist Jeanne-Claude (1935–2009), also his wife. In 1995, they finally succeeded in covering Berlin’s Reichstag (Parliament buildings).
These prints document a series of proposed but unrealised projects. Somewhat ironically, Christo has not yet received permission to wrap two major museums in New York, where he lives.
Is there a hidden meaning to this work? The museum literally ‘under wraps’ – a cumbersome monolith beyond our reach? Or does the series simply offer a fresh perspective on the world, as Christo claims?
