Overview
Kawana Pitiroi Paipai was a noted chief and tohunga (ritual expert) of the Ngāti Ruaka and Te Āti Haunui-ā-Pāpārangi iwi (tribe) of Whanganui. A celebrated warrior, he was awarded the New Zealand War medal in 1874. He once described to Governor Grey how he took part in moa hunts during his youth.
