Position of Maori look-out, commanding view to all approaches to Pa and to Port Underwood from the north and south, marked thus, X.
It was at this Island Pa that the Proclamation of the British Sovereignty [sic] over the Middle (now South) Island of New Zealand was made, on the 17th June, 1840, by Major Bunbury, 80th Regiment, and Captain Nais, of H.M.S. "Herald", vide Major Bunbury's report to Governor Hobson:
"The Marines were landed, and eh Union Jack hoisted on the Horikaka Pa under a salute of 21 guns. The yards were also manned, and three cheers were given, &c." [sic]
