item details
Teokotai Pita; Cook Islands
Overview
This is a titē (drumstick) used to play pate or tokere (slit drums) from the Cook Islands. There are usually six drums in a Cook Island tini ka'ara (drum ensemble) - two skin covered drums and four wooden slit drums.
Acquisition history
This titē is one of two sticks associated with a heavily carved drum originally purchased by Jill Reynolds during an extended stay in the Cook Islands in the mid to late twentieth century. It was later acquired by Te Papa through the David White Gallery in Wellington.
