Plate 16 of 37 from Georgina Hetley and Édouard Raoul's Fleurs Sauvages et Boix Précieux de la Nouvelle-Zélande (1889). The coloured illustration is accompanied by the following text describing the plant:

METROSIDEROS FLORIDA, SM., MYRTACÉES

Cette plante se trouve dans toutes les forêts de la Nouvelle-Zélande et offre lorsqu’elle est en fleur le plus bel aspect. Elle enserre la partie inférieure des arbres et devient un arbre elle-même, étouffant celui qui fut son tuteur. La couleur de la fleur varie entre l’écarlate et le jaune　; elle est souvent de forme sphérique et ressemble au Golden Bottlebrush d’Australie quoique plus brillante en couleur. Fleurit en automne tandis que les autres Ratas ne fleurissent qu’au printemps.

[This is found throughout the Islands in forests, and has a most brilliant appearance when in blossom; it clothes the lower part of the tree, and becomes a tree itself, killing the one which assisted it to climb. The colour of the flower varies from scarlet to yellow, and is often quite spherical in shape. It resembles the Golden Bottlebrush of Australia, though brighter in colour. It flowers in Autumn, and the other Ratas in Spring.]*
