Overview
The accompanying text reads: The natives commonly place a dead body in this way, covered with the mats or blankets formerly worn by the deceased. It is seldom removed afterwards, and everything with the fence is consecrated by the native tapu, until this is taken off by some chief who has the power and the inclination.
