Overview
This media file includes all the leaflets and information distributed by the Flag Consideration Project throughout New Zealand in the lead up to the two flag referenda held in 2015 and 2016 to decide whether New Zealand would have a new flag.
The process began in mid-2015 when the Flag Consideration Panel asked New Zealanders to share their views and values as well as suggest alternative flag designs.
The Flag Consideration Panel reviewed all 10,292 flag designs and announced a long list of 40 flag designs in August 2015. Five of these alternative flag designs were then ranked in the first referendum in November-December 2015. Kyle Lockwood's silver fern design (black, white and blue) won the vote. His flag was then ranked against the current New Zealand flag (blue ensign) in the second referendum held in March 2016.
Final decision
The majority of voters (56.6%) chose to retain the current flag in the final referendum in March 2016.
