Overview
Sangeeta Sandrasegar’s print provides a female perspective on World War I. The photographic image shows the former Melbourne home of her great-great-uncle, who served, and her aunt. It symbolises women left at home to deal with the uncertainty and consequences of the war.
The middle image is of a letter Sandrasegar’s great-great-aunt received in response to her enquiries about her husband’s whereabouts during the war. The badge image is the Female Relative Badge, issued in Australia to wives or mothers of soldiers on active service.
The background drawings show war scenes, but, in reference to Sandrasegar’s Indian heritage, the style mimics paintings done by Indian women on the walls of temples and palaces.
