Artist's letters

This series consists largely of artist’s letters and associated ephemera.
Note:
For a considerable time art curators, who regularly received correspondence from artists, sent many original letters to the Museum Library where they were filed in the artist files. This was done as the information contained in the letters was of considerable research interest and it made more sense that the letters be available in a publically available location [this was prior to there being a Museum archive]. At some point it was agreed, between the Art Manuscript Curator and the Special Services Librarian, that the biographical file system, consisting largely of published material, was not an appropriate repository for original archival material so it was decided that these letters be removed and deposited in a separate artists letters archive in the Art Manuscript archive.
This is the essence of the current collection which, while not an ideal solution (as the providence of much of the correspondence is likely to have been lost) it is probably the best solution to an inherited problem.

The Library still manages the collection of artist's published material.
