item details
Overview
This is a paddle made to go with model outrigger canoe from the north coast of Irian Jaya near Jayapura. In this region, full size canoes were used for fishing expeditions and for travelling short distances. Paddles were used to help steer the canoe if a sail was being used or for propelling the canoe forward in the absence of wind power.
Model canoes
Models of canoes and other sailing vessels from the Pacific have long been popular collectors items and there are many in Te Papa's collections. However, with the development of tourism in the Pacific in the twentieth century, the demand for canoe models increased, along with a general decline in the standards of workmanship. This paddle is associated with a particularly fine model canoe that has some significant detailing in its painted motifs and the careful reproduction of lashings and decorative fittings.Acquisition History
This model was made in 1984 and given to New Zealand diplomat Ruth Nuttal during her assignment to the region. It was acquired by Te Papa from Rhys Richards in 2013.
