Overview
This photograph shows a woman dressed as a young Queen Victoria in the 'Spirit of Empire' pageant at the Wellington Centennial Exhibition, November 1939 - March 1940 (and/or possibly the Red Cross Pageant in September 1940; and/or the Victory Queen Carnival grand finale held in June 1941).
She was Miss Marjorie Millar, becoming Mrs Marjorie Holmes by the time the role was reprised for the 1941 Victory Queen Carnival. Her costume was designed by Mollie Rodie.
Pageants and queen carnivals were popular ways to raise money during the Second World War (1939-45).
