Queen of Victory
Miss Joan Young, Queen of Public Services, crowned as the overall Queen of Victory for raising the most votes and money during the Victory Queen Carnival. This photograph was taken at the grand finale of the carnival in the Wellington Town Hall, June 1941.
Miss Young is flanked by Dr Oswald Chettle Mazengarb as Lord Chamberlain on the left of the image, and possibly John Annand-Smith on the right of the image (he was the Chairman of the Victory Queen Carnival Committee).
A lace wool gown
For her coronation of Victory Queen, Joan Young wore a lace wool wedding gown, which was on loan from the New Zealand Wool Council, and subsequently gifted to Joan. 'A product of New Zealand', the gown had featured in the Wool Council's display at the Centennial Exhibition, and the following national mannequin tour. The tour was designed to help raise money for the Patriotic Fund.
