Tie

This neck tie is part of the male choir uniform of the Tokaikolo Christian Church in Wellington. The full uniform consists of a yellow jacket, white shirt,and a tupenu (formal lavalava). Around the waist a kafa nono'o (plaited waist cord)s ecures a taovala (pandanus mat) worn as an overskirt.

Significance

In New Zealand, choral activity in many Pacific communities centres on churches - a regular meeting place for families living across large areas and suburbs. Churches are a focal point for worship and social events, a venue for homework centres and bible classes and they provide valuable cultural, spiritual and welfare support. Community spirit and identity are built around the church and its activities. Choir uniforms are one medium through which these identities are expressed.
