Overview

This badge called for New Zealanders to boycott French products because of oppressive French rule in New Caledonia (Kanaky) and Tahiti and nuclear testing at Moruroa.

The badge was part of a campaign called 'Quittez Le Pacifique!' which called for France to withdraw from its Pacific territories so that the indigenous peoples could reclaim their economic and political independence and become nuclear-free. The campaign was run by a coalition of groups: Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Kanak Solidarity, Council for World Peace, Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific, Greenpeace, Women for Peace, Corso, and the Wellington Trades Council.

The badge was made just before the French bombing of the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior in Auckland Harbour on 10 July 1985. The aftermath and deterioration of relations between France and New Zealand led to the intensification of boycotts of all things French.
