Overview
This child's tea set is decorated with motifs from the famous children's nursery rhyme 'Jack and Jill':
Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after.
However, the motifs on the tea set illustrate just the opening line of the poem where nothing goes wrong for the duo!
The colourful graphic on the packaging provides visual information on how girls were portrayed in the 1930s and the type of dolls they played with. Gendering and an expected future role for girls (e.g. hostessing) are evident in the imagery. The presence of the golliwog is a reminder that such dolls were popular during the mid 20th century.
