Hapū of Ngāti Porou associated with the common ancestor Manual José, who arrived in the Waiapu area on the East Coast, in the late 1830s. He was known by Māori as Manuera, and by Europeans as Manuel José (or Josef), Emmanuel, or 'The Spaniard'.
