Spontaneous shrines

Temporary sites in public areas where assemblages of personal mementos, artifacts, and flowers are left in memory of victims of tragic events. These sites serve as places for prayer, mourning, and reflection, and develop in response to the event. They are often (but not always) in proximity to the event.
