Overview

Refers to a Belgian lace pillow-lace worked with fine thread in large sprays. It is characterized by floral motifs that are bobbin-made and sometimes resemble tape motifs, joined by thread bars (brides). It was made from circa 1840 throughout the 19th century in Brussels and Bruges. Most examples are considered inferior to other lace produced in Brussels, however, it was inexpensive and commercially successful.
