Overview

Use generally for any articles, such as shields, trunks, or containers, made by the Plains Indians from rawhide made from bison or other large-animal hide. Use specifically for large, folded, rectangular envelopelike containers made usually though not exclusively from bison rawhide, characteristically decorated with painted designs, and used for the packing of dried meat and other dried foods, blankets, or clothing, for example.
