Overview
Generally, the process of separating an object or material from end to end into two or more layers. In the context of leather manufacture, use specifically for the process of dividing a hide or skin horizontally into two or more layers, a practice originating with the introduction of the splitting machine in the mid-19th century, performed either after the hide or skin has been fully or partially limed, or after tanning. The resulting layers are termed "splits."
