crewelwork

Refers to embroidery done with distinctive, two-ply, loosely twisted woolen yarns known as "crewel wool." Crewelwork traditionally has a twill foundation, with linen warp and cotton weft; however, pure linen or cotton cloth or another fabric may be used. It may be intended for framing or fashioned into apparel, bed hangings, furniture coverings, or other items. It is characterized by having a more free-hand style than other types of embroidery. The creation of crewelwork particularly flourished in 16th- to 18th-century Europe and the American colonies, with designs inspired by textiles from India and the Middle East.
