Overview
Refers to rulers, particularly emperors, who ruled one of the following entities: the German Holy Roman Empire, the empire of Austria-Hungary from 1804, or Germany from 1871-1918. The term is occasionally used in a more general sense to refer to any Germanic supreme ruler who reigned from the 13th century onwards. It is derived from an early German word that in turn was derived from the Latin word for "Caesar."
