Action painting

Refers to the term applied to the work of Abstract Expressionist painters such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. The style is characterized by the use of impulsive and energentic brushstrokes that reflect the artist's psycological state, and by an emphasis on the work being an arena in which to perform the act of painting.
