Overview

Skin of a deer or other member of the cervid family, used especially for clothing, moccasins, and bookbinding leather. In early bookbinding, before the sixteenth century, the skin was either processed with ime or alum-tawed to make it white in appearance. For processed deerskin, use "buckskin" or "doeskin (skin)."
