Overview
Refers to two-dimensional decoration applied to pottery by using paint made of metallic oxides or other pigments held in suspension in slip or another medium. The pigments are typically applied by using a brush or other tool, either under a glaze or over it, and are generally applied to a fired body, except in the case of hard porcelain. The painted object is typically fired again to fuse the pigment. The term is particularly used to refer to Ancient Greek red- and black-figure works.
