Overview
Originally boards or open structures of shelves on which cups, especially silver, might be placed for storage or display; often used interchangeably with buffets and dressers in the Middle Ages. Beginning in the 15th century, doors were added. Today a generic term for all such receptacles enclosed by doors, sometimes built-in.
