Overview
Inspired by his early experiments with clay, Peter Stichbury left New Zealand in 1957 to learn from the leaders of the studio pottery movement. He worked initially at Bernard Leach’s pottery in St Ives (the Leach Pottery) before travelling to Nigeria to work with another English potter, Michael Cardew, in Abuja (now known as Suleja).
Presenting examples of Stichbury’s pottery and work by his mentors (now owned by Te Papa), together with his letters and photographs, the exhibition explores this formative period and its enduring influence on Stichbury’s career.
