Overview
For most of the twentieth century, fur trimmed garments and fur accessories were standard pieces in women's wardrobes. Many of these items also incorporated the heads, paws and tails of animals.
Fur was often added to an outfit when a woman wanted to look her best. This is demonstrated by this selection of 12 portraits taken by studio photographers Spencer Digby and Berry & Co of Wellington.
Today, however, wearing fur is no longer seen as a sign of respectability. And, with the development of groups supporting animal rights, wearing it has become an ethical issue.
