Poster, 'Come into the ranks'

This British First World War poster aims to transform a crowd of individual civilians into a marching column of identical troops. The viewer is encouraged to come forward from the crowd and act.

The image conveys a sense of communal effort in defence of the nation. Different classes of society and occupation are portrayed in the foreground (indicated by their headwear and dress), but their social differences will be erased as they become part of the nation's army.

Such posters were displayed on city streets and recruiting stations.
