Overview
This medal was awarded to all those who entered the theatre of war. Every recipient of the Victory Medal also qualified for the British War Medal but not vice versa. All three armed services were eligible, and the medals were struck in bronze. A total of 5,725,000 Victory Medals were issued, and the soldier’s regiment and number are inscribed around the rims.
This medal was awarded to H.T. Marshall, who was a 2nd Lieutenant of the NZEF’s Rifle Brigade. He is described in The Official History of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade as a gallant leader, and a daring and successful commander. Marshall also received a Military Cross for gallantry, an award which only fourteen other New Zealander Rifle Brigadiers were given.
This medal was designed by W. McMillan. The obverse depicts a winged classical figure representing victory. William McMillan R.A. was a member of the Artists Rifles, and he also designed the British War Medal.
