Overview
Rachel Hogg was born in New Zealand and went to London with her family during the First World War, where she went to school.
Her father, Robert Henry Hogg, was a doctor and initially he served in Egypt at the New Zealand General Hospital, Cairo. Later, he was the Medical Officer in charge of Forest Park at No. 1 New Zealand General Hospital at Brockenhurst. After the war, Robert Hogg resumed general practice in Invercargill.
When she was 17 years old, Rachel volunteered as a Red Cross VAD nurse at Brokenhurst. For the first six months, from 11 February 1918, she was a Dining Hall Assistant.
She volunteered for another six months, from 22 July 1918, and also requested training in massage therapy. This was interrupted by sick leave from 20 october when she contracted influenza.
Rachel travelled back to New Zealand in March 1919 on the Tainui. This photograph appears to have been taken back in New Zealand, and shows Rachel in her VAD uniform.
