Overview
This large pot exemplifies the traditional construction and decoration methods used by the women potters of Kwali village, Nigeria. These methods – which included hand-turning, beating, dragging, coiling, and smoothing – were still employed while potters were learning wheel-thrown techniques at the training centre in Abuja. Kwali was the home-town of the much-admired Ladi Kwali; an example of the striking stoneware she produced at Abuja appears elsewhere in this exhibition.
