Overview
In 1900, the Australian Tom Roberts made this tiny painting when his ship was quarantined in Wellington. He has responded to New Zealand’s light in streaks of thick impasto on his typical wooden ‘canvas’ – probably a cigar-box lid.
A lively flow of people and ideas between Europe, Australia, and New Zealand enabled local artists – those ‘on the peripheries’ – to participate in international movements.
