Overview
This tin was used to store 'Planters' Pride' tea, sold by the Colombo Tea Co. of Dunedin from the early 1900s. The tin is blue with pictures of animals on the outside.
A Royal Favourite
Planters' Pride was supplied to the Prince of Wales during his 1920 tour, and New Zealand consumers were encouraged to 'Use the Tea the Prince Used.' 'Whether at Home, or visiting the outposts of Empire,' it was said that the Prince enjoyed only the best, and Planters' Pride 'held a privileged place in his Menu.'
Blended from 'the choicest Ceylon crops,' Planter's Pride was one of a number of tea products available in the twentieth century, supplying the national demand for a good strong 'cuppa.' Until the 1970s tea consumption in New Zealand averaged 3kg per person, although by the end of the century coffee had become the hot drink of choice for many.
