Overview
This photograph shows Pollyanna Fergusson and her son at a Deaf cricket match. Pollyanna comments that she ‘went to Deaf cricket not to watch the game, but to catch up with old friends and new friends. The Deaf Cricket Tournament is one of many Deaf sports events that Deaf community members look forward to playing, watching, and socialising with their friends in NZSL. It is where they feel more relaxed and comfortable communicating on the same level using their own language.’
The photographer, Bruce Connew reflected that ‘the game was an intense match, an excitable crowd and players, well supported in Hagley Park. The silent clapping was a revelation to me, if only drawing attention to how we hearing people are isolated from the Deaf.’
