Overview
During the campaign for women's suffrage in New Zealand, those who supported the 1893 Electoral Bill were presented with a white camellia to wear in their buttonhole. The white camellia has since become an enduring symbol of woman's suffrage in New Zealand.
In this badge, the camellia is circled by the international symbol of the women’s liberation movement and radical feminism. The raised clenched fist of solidarity and ‘power’ movements is combined with the astrological and astronomical symbol of the planet Venus, associated with the Roman goddess Venus and symbolising the female gender.
Feminist thinker, writer and editor Anne Else wore this badge at the 1979 United Women's Convention, an important women’s rights rally which took place in Hamilton, New Zealand.
