Overview
This is the most common style of piupiu (waist or shoulder garment) seen today, with its cylindrical strands of harakeke (New Zealand flax) and muka (processed New Zealand flax fibre) dyed black in a distinctive, strong pattern. However, the band of taniko (geometric weaving) at the top, and the rows of feathers, are not commonly seen in piupiu.
The band of taniko is woven from muka (processed New Zealand flax fibre) dyed with customary dyes, in a triangular aronui pattern which refers to knowledge of the physical world. The feathers are from brown kiwi, kereru (New Zealand pigeon), and chicken.
